We break down the ways you can take care of your jewellery, at home

A reflection of her personality, a woman’s jewellery box tells a story. Each jewel is carefully selected to accompany a moment in her life, has deep meaning and is sometimes passed down generations.

Something as precious as this must be preserved with utmost diligence. The importance of keeping jewellery away from germs and hindrances that may damage them is extremely relevant to our current times and will continue to be for years to come.

Which is why, we are bringing you some simple ways you can keep germs away from your jewellery, while staying safely in the comfort of your home.

Clean Jewellery at Home with Ease

Wearing your jewellery while washing your hands may damage them, make them appear lustreless and old. Also, it’s important that you wash the germs underneath them as well, so take off your jewellery while washing your hands and make sure to put them back on when your hands are clean and dry!

If you are looking to clean your jewellery, we suggest a 1:1 mix of warm water and gentle dish soap. All you have to do is soak them for 2-3 minutes and then gently wipe them down with a soft washcloth.

Do not do this too often. Once a week is good enough to keep the harmful germs at bay!

If your jewellery has hard gemstones or is made of solid gold, you can consider using sani-tisers, but do remember to use small quantities as you want to preserve your jewellery’s shine.

The problem with silver jewellery is that they have a very soft lustre, that can be tarnished easily.
Here are 2 easy ways you can clean your silver jewellery at home!

One method is to clean them using a mix of lemon juice and a little water. You can soak the jewellery for 2 minutes and then wipe them down with a soft cotton cloth. As you wipe, you will notice the oxidants coming off slowly; in addition to this, the lemon acts as a great antibacterial agent.

Another easy way you can polish them at home is by using toothpaste. Apply toothpaste to your jewellery, leave it on for 5 minutes and use a piece of cotton to wipe it off. This ren-ders instant results, without damaging the jewellery in any way. However, if your jewellery does have minute motifs, getting the toothpaste out is going to take time.

It’s very important that you store your precious jewels separately. When they are kept in separate boxes, they don’t get stretched against different pieces, and therefore remain shining for a longer period.

Make sure that you keep them in an airtight box, or in a zip-lock bag to keep them clean and away from germs or any moisture that can lead to tarnishing.

While they may have been forged in heat, warmth, direct sunlight and heat of any kind are not good for your jewellery. Exposure to heat can lead to the formation of a black coat over jewellery, breakage and even some diminishing in shine.

So, keep them away from direct exposure as much as possible.

While we understand that you would want your jewellery to smell fresh and clean, we rec-ommend you resort to the aforementioned cleaning methods and not use perfume on your jewellery. Remember, perfumes are made up of different chemicals, some of which can erode your jewellery and dim their shine.

Did you know that the surface of pearls can easily get scratched if not cleaned with care? Use a soft cloth and gently wipe over them before wearing them to your next function. That is the perfect way to ensure they are clean and perfect.

So, there you have it. Some of the easiest yet effective ways you can keep your jewellery clean at home. After all, these aren’t just material things, they are heirlooms that bring you joy, creations that remind you of a treasured moment and pieces that carefully elevate your beauty.
